CYBERSECURITY: How to Stay Safe From AI Threats
Ted Shin | Information Security Officer/VP | Customer Education
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful technology that can enhance our lives in many ways. However, it can pose serious risks if not used responsibly or ethically.
What are AI threats?
AI threats are malicious or harmful actions that AI systems or agents can perform. These can include cyberattacks, fraud, identity theft, data breaches, misinformation, manipulation, etc. AI threats can target individuals, organizations, or even entire societies. They can also be intentional or unintentional, depending on the motives and capabilities of the actors behind them.
Why are AI threats dangerous?
AI threats are dangerous because they can exploit the vulnerabilities of our digital systems and networks, as well as our human psychology and behavior. AI threats can be more sophisticated, scalable, and adaptable than traditional threats, making them harder to detect, prevent, and respond to. AI threats can also seriously affect our privacy, security, trust, and well-being.
How can you protect yourself from AI threats?
The good news is that you can take some simple steps to protect yourself from AI threats. Here are some tips to follow:
- Be aware of the sources and credibility of the information you consume online. Do not trust everything you see or hear, especially if it is sensational, emotional, or contradictory. Verify the facts and evidence from multiple reliable sources before you share or act on it.
- Be careful of the links and attachments you click or open in your emails, messages, or social media. Do not provide personal or financial information to anyone you do not know or trust. Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication for your online accounts and devices.
- Be vigilant of the requests and offers you receive online or over the phone. Do not fall for scams or phishing attempts that trick you into giving away your money or data. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Be respectful and responsible when you use or create AI systems or agents. Please do not use them for illegal, unethical, or harmful purposes. Do not abuse or manipulate others with them. Please do not rely on them blindly or unquestioningly. Always consider the potential impacts and implications of your actions.
